PRIMARY THURLEY RESEARCH - INTRODUCTION

The initial objective of starting up this homepage was to just research the descendants of my family tree (the Great Hallingbury, Essex THURLEYs), but after discovering the extent of the spread of the THURLEY surname throughout the UK, Australia, USA and other parts of the world, I decided to broaden this page's focus to cover other THURLEY surname research. The "Other THURLEY Research" Section of this web site links to other THURLEY homepages as well as providing a resource for THURLEY researchers to display their individual research efforts. With regard to the Great Hallingbury THURLEYs, this page shows that how these descendants not only consolidated their presence in the local Great Hallingbury area but, via six convicts and one free settler, established a major base in Australia. The research contained on this page is just the "tip of the iceberg" in regards the spread of THURLEYs throughout the world. While this website portrays Great Hallingbury as the "spiritual home"of my line of THURLEYs, the earlist research indicates that they occupied the neighboring area Saffron Waldron area before moving to Great Hallingbury. The Australian THURLEY research for this line is quite advanced but is only based on the descendants of one Tasmanian convict (my gg grandfather) and one Tasmanian free settler . The other Tasmanian convict, William Thurley, was lost the "demon drink" and died of "softening of the brain" in his early forties without fathering children. The descendants of four New South Wales THURLEY convicts remains a mystery to this day (this topic is covered in more detail in the "Convict Trials" section of this homepage).
